“Technological change accelerates at such a rapid rate that ignoring or delaying response to it can be overwhelming.”- Russell Ackoff, the father of systems management

Have you ever moused-over a highlighted word and seen a message-filled dialogue box appear, usually about a benefit?  That is anchor text.  It adds value to your content, extends the reach of your optimized key words, and can direct readers to a specific webpage to support your business strategy.  Understand how to use anchor text to reach your audience and increase your story’s SEO quotient; it is a good way to put technology to work.

Anchor text is an SEO secret that works in partnership with keywords and linking but is not well understood.  It invites readers to visit a specific URL destination, which improves click-through rates and your story’s reach.  Anchor text appears only when the user scrolls over the hyperlinked image or word. Here is an example: anchor text.

Here is the actual coding for the hyperlink and anchor text above:

a title=”Improve search engine rankings with anchor text”
href=”http://domainbean.com/2008/04/19/anchor-text-link/”>Anchor text

This is basic anchor text coding. Use it when you distribute hospitality-related content via our industry’s most popular news feeds to organically increase your company’s search engine rankings.  Different distribution sites will use some variation of the code above, so be sure to check with the editor.

At Softscribe, we regularly post our hospitality industry clients’ news to PRWeb plus three different news feeds for that vertical, but until recently only used anchor text for PRWeb.  We thank Charles Deyo, president of Cendyn (client), for the anchor text call to action.  Charles’ suggestion to add anchor text inspired us to partner with our news feed providers to make it a part of their standard posting process. We appreciate the time and trouble our news feed providers Hotel-Online, Hotel News Resource, and Hsyndicate spent to streamline this process.

Now anchor text is available on those venues for the benefit of our entire industry.  It compounds our clients’ marketing investment.

What about you?  If you created anchor text for your name, what would it say?

  • I had a look at your link example above and it is not what I saw when I visited the DomainBean.com website.

    There is another page at DomainBean on "How To Make An html Anchor Text Link" that shows the actual code.

    Copy the code below, and place it into your articles (html only)

    (Note: to make this VALID html remove the two outside brackets [ ] and replace them with < > respectively. If I don't show the example this way, it may end up just showing a link in this comment box and not what the link should look like.

    [a href="http://domainbean.com/2008/04/19/anchor-text-link/">Change the Domain URL then place your Keyword Rich Text Here!</a]

    Don't forget, replace the outer [ ] with < > respectively.

    This is a wonderful article and you have provided a great service to your visitors!

    Thank You,
    Bean
